STRC&D 40th Anniversary - Special Recognition Awards
In 2010 Sycamore Trails celebrated 40 years of serving our communities. Part of that celebration included honoring individuals or organizations who have either served the council or the principles upon which the council is based: Respecting nature, conserving resources, developing communities. These individuals received certificates and a tree to be planted at the place of their choosing. STRC&D wishes to thank Woody Warehouse in Lizton, IN and Nucor Steel in Crawfordsville for the donation of the trees.

(L to R) Bill Beard, former RC&D Coordinator, Mike Wilkinson, AML Project Coordinator, and Marshall Nuckolls, a founding director, were all honored at the Council's Annual Meeting of the Members on December 2, 2010. Beard was recognized for advancing the council during his tenure. Wilkinson has done an outstanding job directing the Partner for Reclamation abandoned mine land (AML) project for Sycamore Trails over the past several years. During his 40 years of service, Nuckolls helped organize the council in 1970 and has been an officer at the council, state Indiana League of RC&Ds, and the regional North Central RC&D Association.

Bob Miller - Bob has served on the STRC&D Forestry Committee since 1993, where he is known as the “idea man,” bringing new and innovative ideas to the attention of the committee. He served as chair of that forestry committee for 3 years. In 1997 Bob was appointed by the Parke County Soil & Water Conservation District to the Board of Directors of Sycamore Trails Resource Conservation and Development Council and served in that capacity for 9 years. We honor Bob’s service with his own trademark words: Your work has been “tree-mendous” Bob, thank you for your “wood-erful” service to Sycamore Trails. Sadly, we report that Bob passed away since receiving his award, and will be missed.
Jack Nelson (R)- Jack has been active with our Forestry Committee for many years, and has played a key role in organizing our Forest Industry Recognition Tour and Dinner for the past several years. Jack's skills as a professionally trained forester have also been valuable in our educational programs for woodland owners. Raoul Moore, Secretary of the Forestry Committee, awards Jack his tree and certificate.
Shane Johnson/Pike Lumber Company - Pike Lumber Company has worked with Sycamore Trails Forestry Committee over the years, hosting field days, assisting with education of woodland owners, and participating as a sponsor for many of our forestry activities. Shane Johnson, Plant Manger at the Carbon, IN facility, accepts the award, presented by Jack Nelson at the recent Forest Industry Recognition Tour & Dinner, where Pike hosted the tour portion of the event.
Susan Meadows served for 3 1/2 years as the Coordinator of STRC&D. Sadly the April 2011 budget terminated National Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) funding of the RC&D program and we lost the services of Susan. Susan has been our hardest worker and most exhuberant cheerleader. Her contibutions to the Council will be missed. She kept us organized and energized, and our continued success as a Council will be largely a result of her hard work and dedication in preparing us to fly solo. Susan is pictured with Jim Spence (L), Treasurer of STRC&D and Bud Sharp (R), the President of STRC&D.
TREES Inc. has recently collaborated with Sycamore Trails and the Wabash Valley Audubon Society to work on the eradication of bush honeysuckle in Dobbs Park in Terre Haute. Bush honeysuckle is an invasive plant that is threatening the health and sustainability of our forest and prairie resources. In appreciation of their work in the eradication of invasive plants, STRC&D awarded them a Certificate of Appreciation and six trees to be planted at a place of their choosing. TREES decided to gift these trees to the Vigo County Parks. The certificate was awarded by Beverly Pestel (R), STRC&D V. Pres. and accepted by TREES, Inc. President, Trish Eccles(C). The trees were transferred to Keith Ruble(L), Director of Vigo County Parks.
