Forestry Committee
This committee mainly focuses on education of private woodland owners in order
to encourage good management and stewardship of forest resources. They conduct
field days where the public can get instruction and hands-on experience on such
topics as Timber Stand Improvement (TSI), harvesting, marketing, wildlife
habitat development, tree planting and care, tree identification, and other
forestry issues.

Inaugural Koenig Forestry Award presented
How do you get people who love their
woods to come out of the woods? You tell them it’s time for the annual awards
banquet for Sycamore Trails RC&D Forestry Committee! Over 50 woodland owners,
family and friends came together on March 12th to celebrate another
year of caring for forest land in west central Indiana.
The festivities
included dinner, awards, a speaker, and for some extra fun, a live auction and
door prizes.
David Rader was honored as the inaugural
winner of The Koenig Forestry Award for his stewardship of his property in
Sullivan County. He has worked hard in his woods, as well as the prairie and
pond aspects of his property, to make a wonderful natural habitat at his place.
Keith Ruble of Vigo County received the
Chairman’s award for his active participation in the Forestry Committee since
its inception back in 1970. He has also been a key player in the new Invasive
Plants Committee which grew out of the Forestry Committee several years ago.
Tom Swinford, from the IDNR Division of
Nature Preserves, shared some fascinating facts about the natural areas of the
Mid-Wabash with the group gathered at Clark’s Reception Hall in Rockville.
If you have an interest in woodlands or
controlling invasive plant species, you may want to check out Sycamore Trails as
a source of information and a way to network with people with expertise in these
areas. Check the calendar page for the next meeting of the Forestry and
Invasive Plants committees.
