Ouabache Land Conservancy June 26 - Dr. Marion Jackson to Present the Natural Heritage of Indiana at Westminster Village
On behalf of the Ouabache Land Conservancy (OLC), Dr. Marion Jackson, Emeritus Professor Indiana State University will be presenting his Natural Heritage of Indiana slideshow. It will start at 1:30 p.m. on Friday June 26 at Westminster Village, 1120 E. Davis Drive, Terre Haute.
For more than 20 years, Dr. Jackson has worked closely with The Nature Conservancy, the Indiana Natural Heritage Program, and the Indiana Division of Nature Preserves inventorying the locations and habitat conditions of rare, threatened, and endangered species of plants and animals of Indiana. These collaborations have focused on natural area research methodology and protection strategies for habitats and species vulnerable to extirpation. Dr. Jackson will show slides from his private collection and discuss the production of the PBS four-part documentary The Natural Heritage of Indiana, which was inspired by his 1997 publication of the same name.
Dr. Jackson described his vision for the book as “a celebration of Indiana’s natural heritage—its natural and human history, its landscape and its life—what it once was, what it is now, and what it promises to be.” He emphasizes the importance of understanding the past to prepare “us better to mold Indiana’s future.” He issued this challenge: “if you feel moved to help protect what remains of Indiana’s natural heritage, our objective will have been fulfilled.” Please join us for this visual tour of the natural beauty of Indiana! Most recently the OLC has received a 20 acre, mostly wooded, parcel of land from Dr. Jackson to preserve for perpetuity. The Jackson/Schnyder Nature Preserve is located in western Vigo County, near St. Mary of the Woods Village. The OLC is a private, non-profit conservation organization that preserves natural and open areas (woods, prairies, wetlands, and farmlands). The OLC operates in the following west-central Indiana counties: Clay, Fountain, Montgomery, Owen, Parke, Putnam, Sullivan, Vermillion and Vigo. *************************** OUABACHE (pronounced "Wabash") LAND CONSERVANCY BEING ORGANIZED IN VIGO COUNTY AREA
Our Land Trust Committee has been helping to get this new organization established. The conservancy will focus on protecting and preserving land in west central Indiana for future generations. It will help achieve the goal of the Indiana Land Protection Alliance to have the services of a land trust available to all of Indiana. This new conservation organization is in its initial stages, developing articles of incorporation and bylaws. In the meantime, it will operate under the nonprofit umbrella of Sycamore Trails Resource Conservation & Development (RC&D) Council, from which it will eventually take over land-holding activities. Sycamore Trails serves nine counties in west central Indiana, including Vigo and its adjacent counties. They are meeting the first Tuesday of each month at 6:30 PM at the Indiana State University Science Building, Rm 205. If you would like to be a part of the growth and development of the Ouabache Land Conservancy, please check our calendar page for the next scheduled meeting, or contact the Sycamore Trails office at strcd@sycamoretrails.org or (765) 653-9785.
