Invasive Plants Committee

Invasive plants are spreading on almost all private and public lands in the Midwest, with a negative effect on our environment and economy. A group of our volunteers has decided to try to address this problem. This group usually meets the first Monday of each month, and is currently pursuing the creation of a Cooperative Weed Management Area with other organizations.

Current goals of the Invasive Plants Committee

1.      Determine scope of problem - Create maps of invasive plants in the Sycamore Trails RC&D area.

2.      Pursue research and action in control and eradication of Invasive Plants.

3.      Promote education regarding invasive plants and their control.

4.      Provide leadership in assembling partnerships of like minded groups.

Workshop Held Saturday, June 14, 2008
9:00 AM to 2:30 PM at Pfizer, Inc.-Terre Haute Facility

This workshop will help educated 30 interested property owners and managers on identification and control of invasive plants, with emphasis on bush honeysuckle.  Speakers will included Ellen Jacquart of The Nature Conservancy and Ron Rathfon and Don Carlson of Purdue University.  Morning sessions were education presentations, which included a very helpful display of live potted invasives to aid in identification.  After lunch, the group saw a demonstration of mechanical and herbicide control methods.

This program also provided Private Applicator Recertification Program (PARP) credits and Continuing Certification Hours for Commercial Applicators.

The program was sponsored by Sycamore Trails Invasive Plants and Education Committees and Pfizer, Inc. – Terre Haute Facility.  Assistance was also provided by the Midwest Invasive Plants Network and Purdue Cooperative Extension Service.

Group toured a demonstration site in the afternoon for some real-life learning.
